The Resurrection Angel Window
This stunning window was created in the Tiffany Studios, New York City (one of two at Christ Church Greenwich). We assume it was produced in the last 19th century. It is given in memory of Selena Knapp Johnson, 1842-1869. It is believed that both this and our second Tiffany window, Christ Blessing the Children, were originally located in the chapel of the second Christ Church and moved to the current location in 1910. The Lilies in the stained glass are symbols of The Resurrection. This along with the narrative in the Gospels that there were angels in the tomb that told Mary Magdalene and the disciples that Christ had risen. The Angel’s gaze up to heaven and serene stance invites us to pause and simply be in God’s presence.
O everlasting God, who hast ordained and constituted the ministries of angels and mortals in a wonderful order: Mercifully grant that, as thy holy angels always serve and worship thee in heaven, so by thy appointment, they may help and defend us on earth, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
